The band includes Andrea Reid (Vocals and rhythm guitar), Nick Burfield (Vocals and lead guitar), Mikey Muggeridge (Mandolin and vocals), Cara Brasted (Fiddle and vocals), and Marz Connelly (Double bass and vocals). On the back of the success of their first Album, Butter Wouldn’t Melt got to work in the studio and in 2025 released Where the roots grow deep, an ode to all the music that brought them together in the first place. This album turned out to be the first chapter in a two-part album journey and is set to be followed by Beneath the stars above in 2026. Together, these albums form a story in contrast—two sides of the same mountain, two worlds intertwined: one bathed in light, the other steeped in shadow. Both records showcase Butter Wouldn’t Melt’s signature local storytelling and rich harmonies, weaving contemporary folk, country, bluegrass, and Americana into a sound that is as timeless as it is deeply personal. BILL HICKMAN – FIRST SET
Saturday 6 September 2025
First Set; Bill Hickman is an intense, lyrical singer/songwriter from Wellington. A long serving stalwart of New Zealand stages, Bill has played in bands (The Shot Band, Billy Bones, Parcel of Rogues and King Lazy) and as a soloist all over the country and further abroad. A self-described ‘folkie with a chip on his shoulder’, Bill’s songs run the gamut from murder and outlaws to absent friends, love and gratitude. With a strong, gravel dragged voice and country inflected acoustic guitar; fans of Warren Zevon, Johnny Cash and Townes van Zandt will find touchstones in his songwriting and selected covers. On stage, Bill’s primary approach is ‘gutsy’. But the stomp and grit are interspersed with valleys of stark, weary emotion, underpinned by a propulsive, finger style guitar. Bill’s songs trace around the aches and scars before giving it all a good, solid kick in the guts.

CINDY MUGGERIDGE
AND NEIL BILLINGTON –
SECOND SET (AFTER BILL)
Saturday 6 September 2025
Cindy Muggeridge draws heavily from boogie-woogie, the blues piano of Otis Spann and the New Orleans sound of Doctor John. She plays also as part of her band The Raven Mavens and is known as Wellington’s own ‘Queen of the Boogie Woogie Piano’, with fans coming from far and wide to hear songs she has written, and the covers she chooses play.
“Writing my own songs has been part of the musical journey for me”, says Cindy. The fruit of these efforts resulted in an album launched at the Wellington Bluegrass Society, called simply “The Raven Mavens Quartette”.
In recent years Neil Billington and Cindy have formed a duo, combining with Cindy’s inimitable piano based original songs, blues, boogies and ballads.
Neil is one of the leading exponents of the harmonica to come out of New Zealand, and combines a rare capacity for both the traditional blues harmonica and the less typical chromatic harmonica. He is equally at home whether playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter on the blues harp or reflecting the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of Belgian jazz great, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans, on chromatic harmonica. Neil covers a range of genres, from old-time pre-war blues through to the great Chicago blues harp masters, to the ballads of the American song-book and jazz standards of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Neil has played on international stages with some of the world’s finest blues musicians, like Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and has played with many of New Zealand’s finest jazz and blues musicians at gigs and festivals around the country. He has also performed regularly up the coast with his old friend and local identity Andrew London as part of the former Hot Club Sandwich.

NATHAN TORVIK’S MANDOLIN WORKSHOPS
Sunday 24 August 2025
Mandolin maestro Nathan Torvik brought his mandolin mastery to Hilltop for two workshops.
One of New Zealand’s most quietly brilliant multi-instrumentalists, Nate doesn’t just play the mandolin—he commands it, wielding one of the only two prized Gibson F5s in the country.

THE EARLY BOBS
Saturday 23 August 2025
Clayton Taylor and Nathan Torvik came up specially from Aniseed Valley & Tasman to bring us The Early Bobs, their heartfelt homage to Dylan’s golden years. Think harmonicas, blistering guitar breaks, and especially a voice that fans say “does Bob better than Dylan”.
From the Dust Bowl ballads to the biting protest songs, they’ll take you from 1961 to 1979 with authenticity, soul, and a whole lot of magic. If you love Dylan—or just good stories wrapped in unforgettable tunes—these are your guys. Believe me – this really is excellent stuff. Clayton & Nate have been transporting folk at the Ruby Bay Store for the past two years, so we just had to get these out-of-towners back up to Wellington to ‘spread the vibe’.

THE CAROL BEAN BAND
Gate opens 6.30pm
Music Starts 7pm
Saturday 9 August 2025
The Carol Bean Band play a mix of jazzy blues with a heavy helping of original songs and stylish instrumentation. Carol Bean – vocals and guitar, Costa Botes – guitar(s) and George Packard – upright bass.
English-born, California-raised, Carol was influenced by the West Coast music of the 60s and the blues of Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Doc Watson. At LA’s Ash Grove and McCabe’s Music Store she was taught her picking style from a young Ry Cooder who encouraged her to buy the Martin guitar she still plays today. Carol has fronted several bands in New Zealand and recorded 3 studio albums, all on Spotify. She continues to perform at the Wellington Roomfulla Blues Club and with the Kelburn Viaduct Municipal Ensemble Jug Band. “Carol’s singing is versatile, vibrant, and delivers an earthy quality to her songs.”
Tom Villano, LA
“… when the mood drops she reveals a more intimate, reflective side….” Graham Reid
“The first three songs of Next Bus Out perfectly set the album up for the interesting journey that is to come.” Nick Bollinger.
Costa is a veteran independent filmmaker with several award winning short films and feature length documentaries to his credit, including the notorious ‘mock doc’ Forgotten Silver, which he made with Peter Jackson. For the last two decades he has created a run of films celebrating individuals who are quirky, creative, passionate, and above all, persistent (Struggle No More, The Last Dogs of Winter, Act of Kindness, Angie). These films have included studies of musicians (Paddy Burgin’s Wooden Box Band, Nigel Gavin’s Circus, and The Shot Band/ Hobnails @ The Paramount Theatre) because Costa has been a persistent closet musician himself. He has had stints with Chris and Eva Prowse, and Carol Bean’s Mount Misery String Band. When he was younger, Costa wanted to move his fingers really fast. Now he just tries to put them in the right place, song by song, and man – does he ever. “Tasty”, “Amazing”, “Great playing”.
Costa Botes | NZ On Screen Costa Botes Lone Pine Films (vimeo.com)
George is a professional musician and tutor on Whitireia Polytechnic’s Music Programme, trained classically on the cello. George’s first improvisational experiences were playing ukulele along with the Rolling Stones, John Mayall and The Band (in his bedroom). With little market for improvisational ukulele he took up the double bass.
George enjoys playing in bands that push the envelope and give expression to the human soul. He has played extensively in many Wellington groups (including currently with the Balkany band), appearing a number of times for the Wellington International Festival of the Arts, undertaking national tours for Chamber Music New Zealand, and backing overseas artists in New Zealand. His playing ranges from classical to jazz, to Latin, to ethnic fusion to Americana and country. He believes – at a fundamental level – that music is about human beings making sense of the world and themselves, and about helping heal the world.
Andrew Grayson (who would be playing if not for his broken hand) is also the drummer for the band Ghostplane (Beneath the Sleepy Lagoon; Panther Valley Country Club (Arch Hill Records), which includes Phoenix Foundation members). Not only has he joined our team, but his passion is surfing – so let’s say he’s the youngest and the fittest.

SUNDAY JAM/FOLK COLLABORATION

CHRIS DENT & HANNAH MORRELL
Saturday 26 July 2025
Auckland based Chris Dent is an earthy songwriter who keeps both feet on the ground while being expressive and heartfelt in his stories and music.
His appearance is striking as he wields his albinism with pride in the form of a big white beard. His voice too isn’t quite what you’d expect. More smooth, more pronounced, and more powerful than his rough exterior may evoke. Chris grew up in rural New Zealand and likes to tell tales about the little things, as those are what make our lives rich and full. He’s mostly performed with award-winning indie-folk band Albi & The Wolves but has written songs in many different projects, including a collaboration with Mt Eden Dubstep that has amassed over one million streams, or his side project Sneakers which has a single with over 750,000 streams. Whether it’s on the stage or off Chris is known for his work ethic and as he sets out on a new journey, quietly creating new solo music, he’s excited to see where that leads. For this show, Chris will be joined by the accomplished musician Hannah Morrell on the violin and maybe even the banjo. She is a seasoned touring musician who hails from Tasmania, Australia and has performed with the likes of The Dead Maggies (TAS), Claire Anne Taylor (TAS), Looking For Alaska, Finn Johanson, Holly Arrowsmith, and Jess Bailey (Fables).

THE TEMPESTS
Sunday 20 July 2025
Lynley Christoffersen and Jade Eru weave a vocal magic that can only come from years of singing together. They have lent their sweet soulful harmonies to many artists around Aotearoa, (including Wayne Mason, Darren Watson, Pip Paynes Gospel project) and are currently touring with The Fleetwood Mac Experience.
We celebrated the release of their original EP, The Tempests, which brings their vocal blend to the fore. They performed with their incredible band of musical maestros – Chris Armour and Rob Matthews, (guitars), Miklin Halstead (bass) and Richard te One (drums). Joined by their dear friend Hamish Graham (Hobnail, Shot band, Milkthistle & Love Shack) who opened their set with his lush and lively, beautifully crafted original songs.

TURKEY THE BIRD
Saturday 12 July 2025
We had a fabulous night!!
Turkey The Bird is one of New Zealand’s fabulous folk trios. They remind you of the famous Margarita cocktail infused with a hint of “Simon & Garfunkel”, two ounces of “Mumford and Sons”, a splash of banjo, and served on ice on a sunny day.
Catchy folk songs with stunning rich melodies and effortless smooth lyrics. Songs that tell uplifting stories about love and life. Check out their video ‘Everybody Needs A Little Sunshine‘ here, and with NZ Sign Language – it’s so cool!
This uplifting band hits you with beautiful three part harmonies and toe tapping rhythms. The bearded trio features Andre Manella from Switzerland on guitar, bass and percussion, Adrian Whelan from Ireland on guitar, mandolin, bass and spoons, and Sol Bear Coulton, the token Kiwi, on Banjo and slide guitar.

Acoustic Magic at Hilltop…
Clayton Taylor & Nathan Torvik brought their musical firepower! These are seasoned artists—one with rhythm in his bones, the other with strings that sing.
They were joined by Steve Hemmens and Jo Moir for the wonderful Jam Session.

AMERICANA JAM
Sunday 11th May 2025
We wrapped up the weekend with some soulful acoustic music featuring four of New Zealand’s finest musicians:
Nate Torvik – A magnetic force on the mandolin, Nate plays one of the rarest and most beautiful instruments in the country — a vintage Gibson F5 — and brings it to life with fiery skill & playful creativity.
Jo Moir – A violinist who plays like she’s painting in vivid colour, Jo’s fiddle soars with brightness, heart, and a hint of mischief. Whether weaving lyrical Celtic lines or adding bold harmonies to Americana grooves, her sound is uplifting and unforgettable. Jo is also known for her work with Hobnail and her lush vocals.
Steve Hemmens – The steady heartbeat of the session, Steve’s double bass playing brings warmth, swing, and a gentle pulse that grounds the group. With roots in blues and folk—and decades of collaboration with greats like Bill Lake—his sound is as rich and earthy as aged wood.
Clayton Taylor – With rhythm in his bones and storytelling in his voice, Clayton holds it all together. His deep guitar grooves and soulful vocals draw you in and keep you there—whether it’s a Dylan ballad or a back porch jam that wasn’t on the set list.
These artists came together for an intimate jam session, they wove together Americana, folk, and Celtic traditions. It was a musical conversation!

THE EARLY BOBS
A Tribute to Bob Dylan
Saturday 10th May
Clayton Taylor and Nathan Torvik brought The Early Bobs, their heartfelt homage to Dylan’s golden years. Think harmonicas, blistering guitar breaks, and a especially a voice that fans say “does Bob better than Bob”.
From the Dust Bowl ballads to the biting protest songs, they’ll take you from 1963 to 1979 with authenticity, soul, and a whole lot of magic. If you love Dylan—or just good stories wrapped in unforgettable tunes—these are your guys. Believe me – this really is excellent stuff. Clayton & Nate have been transporting folk at the Ruby Bay Store for the past two years, so we just had to get these ‘out-of-towners’ up to Wellington to ‘spread the vibe’.

MANDOLIN WORKSHOP
Saturday 10th May
Step into the rare air of mandolin mastery with Nate Torvik, one of New Zealand’s most quietly brilliant multi-instrumentalists. Nate doesn’t just play the mandolin—he commands it, wielding one of the only two prized Gibson F5s in the country.
This two-hour workshop is shoulder-to-shoulder with a true maestro. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned picker, Nate helps develop your skill whatever your level.

🎵 Tailored tips based on your experience level
🎵 Easygoing jam time and spontaneous learning moments.
Known for his work across numerous lineups and styles,
Nate brings a rare mix of technical firepower, theoretical depth, and playful warmth. This isn’t a lecture—it’s a launchpad.
“He’s pretty damn good at making sure everyone walks away with something valuable. It’s not just a workshop—it’s a musical awakening.”
It was a special chance to learn from one of the country’s most respected string whisperers.
Nate will be back for more workshops.

THE QUICKENING
Rich Americana Chill
Friday 9th May
Clayton Taylor and Nate Torvik’s The Quickening — raw, rootsy Americana. Heartfelt tributes to the greats: Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and more. From Copperhead Road to Guitar Town, Clayton’s deep rhythms and vocals anchored the set, while Nate’s mandolin leads transported us. Loosely curated, intuitively performed—this show flowed with the mood of the room and the moment.

SHAN JOURNEYS
Saturday 12 April 2025
Shan! Fabulous Wellington singer, songwriter, and pianist Shan Jordan with Giacomo Caleffi on guitar and drums. The Shan duo arrange sound into expressively lyrical, upliftingly melodious and catching original songs with an international flavour…soooo good!
They took us on a journey around the world, through outer space, and on all sorts of travels. We even started with boarding passes 😉 Wonderful originals and great covers including Running up that Hill by Kate Bush, Riding Shotgun by George Ezra, Rolling in the Deep by Adele, and more.
And the moon shone bright and almost full …”look at the moon…it’s whole”!

ADAM McGRATH – SOLO FOLK
Sunday 23 March 2025
Another fully booked gig.
We were SO LUCKY to have Adam McGrath – he’s one of the best. Adam is a folk singer and yarn spinner stationed, he says, wherever he can get a key! Adam is the winner of the 2024 Aotearoa/New Zealand Folk Artist of the Year Award at the Aotearoa/New Zealand music awards. Described by RNZ as a “National Treasure” and the Herald as “NZ’s toughest minded songwriter”, Adam is more widely known as lead singer and songwriter with one of NZ’s most loved roots/country bands The Eastern. He spends eight months a year on the road between NZ, Australia, Europe and parts beyond. With The Eastern and solo he has shared stages with and opened for Fleetwood Mac, Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes and many, more. His song Hope and Wire was the inspiration behind Gaylene Preston’s TV series of the same name and he is known for his service orientated approach to music in the years since. Described as “maybe part folk singer, part preacher, part boxer, and part rodeo clown he is however all heart”. Raucous, tender, roof and spirit raising, a McGrath show goes straight for the spirit level in all of us, looking deep for the good parts and hoping to reach all the thoughtful bits that matter.
Adam’s first solo album was released December ’23. “It’s called Dear Companions, because of everything I’ve learnt or am learning about the people in the songs and what they help me learn about myself and about the world big and small (especially small). But that kind of conception is just how records start, where they end up is up to whoever gets a copy in their life.”

For a really special treat, we were SO lucky to have this trio all the way from Nashville. With music a bit different than trad Hilltop artists, have a good listen online or via Spotify to these full-house pleasers, South for Winter. With a blend of dreamy acoustic duets, foot-stomping folk and bluesy murder ballads, New Zealand-formed and Nashville-based trio South for Winter’s sound is as eclectic as their origins. The act is comprised of Kiwi Nick Stone, Coloradan Dani Cichon, and Michigander Alex Stradal, and together the three multi-instrumentalists and songwriters combine elements such as percussive acoustic guitar, cello, mandolin, suitcase stomp, resonator guitar, and effortless harmonies into a genre-bending sound described by American Songwriter as “impeccable”. Bill Lake’s Slow Bake
Saturday 23 November
This was so great! What a wonderful final gig for 2024!
“Gentle, sometimes witty and just as often moving reflections at every turn” – Graham Reid.
Guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Lake is one of New Zealand’s most respected and long-serving practitioners. For more than four decades this fine lyricist led the iconic country-blues band The Windy City Strugglers, as well as playing with pioneering rock group Mammal in the 70s and fronting brassy funk-rockers The Pelicans in the 80s. His songs have been covered by Midge Marsden, Darren Watson, Kokomo, Rag Poets and Marg Layton.
Bassist Steve Hemmens played with Bill in Mammal. Returned from many years in the UK, he adds warmth and swing to the mix.
Long time popular Wellington musician and ‘colourist’ Alan Norman plays percussion and accordion. Alan is a member of NZ’s seminal Country band The Warratahs, also the Rag Poets, and the trio Burgin, Kerr & Norman.

The Cattlestops
Sunday 17 November 2024
Originally formed on the Kapiti Coast in 2004 The Cattlestops focussed on a country-rock and Western swing repertoire consisting mostly of original songs penned by bass player James Cameron and guitarist Andrew London.
They are playing mostly as a four-piece with local legend Wayne Mason on keys, and Evan Williams on drums. They relish their back catalogue of original western swing and Americana-influenced originals, with a smattering of rhythm and blues and country rock classics.

It’s an intensely human collection of songs that you can return to time after time.“ Heather Savage topbuzzmagazine.com

The London’s Duo
‘Songs I Wrote When I Was Cross’
Saturday 11 November 2023
Andrew London’s quirky songs will make you laugh out loud as you recognise yourself and everyone around you, and all the prejudices, obsessions and weird little habits we put out on display, every day, in this funny little country. There are songs about politics, social status, shopping habits, teenagers, coffee, neighbours and small town protocol. And insights into the unpredictable and tenuous lives of traveling musicians, based on having played a thousand gigs from the woolsheds of Central Otago to the board rooms of Queen Street. Andrew’s songs have contributed to popular trio Hot Club Sandwich, country band The Cattlestops, and numerous collaborations at jazz, blues, folk, country and arts festivals from Queenstown to Auckland, Melbourne to Norfolk Island and Sydney to Saudi Arabia. The enforced isolation of the Covid lockdown saw he and his partner/bass player Kirsten rearrange his entire repertoire for duo, the results viewable on eight Youtube episodes called ‘Live at The Londons’.
His current show ‘Songs I Wrote When I Was Cross’ sees the duo tighter than ever, the songs more concise, with the accent on occasionally acerbic satire, self-deprecating humour and astonishing wordsmithery.
‘I’ve never seen anyone sing so many words, so fast, without swallowing his own tongue. These guys are Flight of The Conchords for Rest Homes’ said a Radio NZ caretaker.

The Hannah Goodin Quintet
Colouring Outside the Lines
Wellington Jazz Festival
Friday 27 October 2023
We see the influence of jazz dotted and splashed in so many musical places and spaces. It weaves through our rhythms, adding bursts of colour and flavour to our chords, and guides numerous melodic decisions. But maybe you wouldn’t say that song was “jazz”, even if some of the rules and ideas have applied. Our quintet will take you on a journey, filled to the brim with pieces that have your fingers snapping and toes tapping. And while you do, maybe there’ll be few… that colour outside the lines of jazz.*
The Hannah Goodin Quintet features top musicians: Joshua Jones (bass), Maurice Phillips (drums), Andrea Robinson (piano, vocals & arranger), Aslan Rowlands (guitar & vocals) and Hannah Goodin (vocals).

Carol Bean & Ruth Wyand
Sunday 2 April
“The first thing that snapped me to attention in Ruth’s bio was that she grew up playing along to Duane Allman and Doc Watson. Well hey, that caught my eye!” – Carol Bean.
The last time Ruth Wyand toured New Zealand, she and Wellington musician Carol Bean got together one afternoon and discovered they both loved playing the blues. The next day, Carol – in true stalker fashion – followed Ruth to the Wairarapa Blues Club and joined her onstage for a fun-filled version of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Big Boss Man’.
On Sunday, April 2nd at Hilltop, Carol played an opening set of favourite pickin’ blues and then invited Ruth to help showcase the songs that had them both laughing and trading off their big mamma blues riffs.
For the second set, Ruth played her own stuff featuring her new album ‘Guitar Routes’.

Matt Joe Gow at Hilltop
Saturday 4 March
Matt Joe Gow grew up in the deep south of New Zealand in a town with bad weather and good music: Dunedin. Surrounded by music, he was encouraged to pick up a guitar at an early age. After traveling the world, Matt moved to Melbourne, Australia, drawn by its vibrant music scene. In 2009 released his debut record The Messenger, produced by multi-Aria award-winner Nash Chambers, and featuring contributions from Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil, and iconic Australian country guitarist Bill Chambers. As Alternative Country continued to grow in popularity, Matt toured and supported acts such as Chris Isaak, Justin Townes Earle, The Jayhawks and Grant Lee Phillips. Whilst regularly working on other projects in the studio, it would be 2016 before the next Matt Joe Gow record, Seven Years, was released to critical acclaim. The record was self-produced by Matt and guitarist Andrew Pollock. After touring and numerous festivals in support of the record, and encouraged by its positive reception, Matt returned to the studio in 2018 to make the follow-up, Break, Rattle and Roll. An ambitious record which went on to win the Music Victoria Award for Best Country Album. After the rewarding but demanding process of making Break, Rattle and Roll, Matt headed back into the studio in 2020 with the concept of making a stripped-back album. Midway, the world was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The result is a unique record which, although laborious to make during a dark time, is the most pure expression of Matt’s song writing and artistic vision of his career… called ‘Between Tonight & Tomorrow’.

After moving to Otepoti, Aotearoa in 2004, Leo has been quietly delivering some of the country’s best, most deeply felt live performances and has built a loyal following.

B#6
Saturday 3rd September
B#6 are the result of six friends from two local musical collectives, Raven Mavens and New Valley Stompers gathering together to create something new and diverse with an emphasis on fun. B#6 are a sextet of four singers, nine instruments, and three song writers that feature the talents of Marian Carter, Cindy Muggeridge, Bill West, Chris Caudwell, Graham Parker, and Barry Carter. They perform a mix of originals, together with some of their favourite songs from the early years of Jazz and Blues composed by people like Buddy Bolden, Bessie Smith, Rosetta Tharpe, Duke Ellington and Ma Rainey. B#6 consists of improvising combinations of Alto Sax, Clarinet, Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, Cornet, Banjo, Guitar, and Upright Bass, which may cause the development of a malady where you find that your feet cannot keep still, and that you have an irresistible urge to get up and dance. For this there is only one cure – DO IT.

Jan Preston Showcase
with Michael Pullman
4pm Sunday 21st August
Jan Preston’s 2022 NZ concerts contain her favourite songs and instrumentals in a SHOWCASE performance. “Over the past 2 years with lockdowns and cancellations due to COVID and border closures, I’ve had time to reflect on my repertoire, rework some material, and bring out songs and instrumentals I haven’t performed in years” says Jan. “With the perspective of time and distance I have been able to hear my music anew, and I’m excited to be expanding my singing and playing.” Jan’s longstanding affection for Winifred Atwell was included in her show, together with her trademark energetic piano grooves and sultry vocals.
“an inspirational and gifted pianist, performer and entertainer”

“Please adjust your G-string”
Saturday 20th August
A hilarious romp through an OE with a difference. Margaret Austin left NZ in 1975, little suspecting what awaited her on the other side of the world. Blessed – or cursed – with a sense of adventure, she turned up her nose at England and went for Amsterdam, Athens and Paris, diving into experiences and situations not for the faint hearted. Some of them involved G-strings, one or two were downright dangerous, and all of them added up to a life of unique discovery. You’ll learn a lot more than how to adjust your G-string.
Margaret Austin is a woman of courage, resilience and humour. Turning her back on a conventional career path, she has deliberately sought experiences in places and situations not for the faint hearted. She was born in Palmerston North, graduated from Victoria University, and set off on an OE in 1975, with no idea that it would last for 13 years. Her experiences in Amsterdam, Athens and above all Paris have provided her with a wealth of information and insights – as well as huge amounts of fun! From erotic dance in Amsterdam to the chorus line of the world famous Folies Bergere, she went on to become a celebrities interviewer, catching up with actor Anthony Hopkins at the Cannes Film Festival. On return to New Zealand, she became the Duchess of Wellington at the invitation of the Duke, thus gaining entrance to a surreal and intriguing world. Director/dramaturg

Matt Joe Gow
7.30pm Friday 19th August
Music Victoria award winner Matt Joe Gow brought his distinctive brand of Americana music back to Wellington his childhood hometown. The show was intimate and acoustic with Matt playing tracks across his entire career (and a few new ones). With his latest single “Sweet Collapse” spending weeks in the Amrap, Countrytown and itunes charts Matt Joe Gow is riding a wave of popularity and creativity leading to his upcoming fourth album “Between Tonight & Tomorrow”. Matt grew up in the deep south of New Zealand, in a town with bad weather and great music; the birthplace of groups such as The Chills, The Clean, and Straitjacket Fits. Surrounded by music, he was encouraged to pick up a guitar from a young age. After traveling the world, Matt moved to Melbourne, Australia, drawn by its culture and vibrant music scene. He formed a band, The Dead Leaves, and in 2009 released his debut record The Messenger, produced by multi-Aria award-winner Nash Chambers, and featuring contributions from Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil, and iconic Australian country guitarist Bill Chambers. As alternative country and Americana continued to grow in popularity, Matt steadily toured and supported acts such as Chris Isaak, The Jayhawks, Justin Townes Earle, James Reyne, Kasey Chambers, Marlon Williams, Jimmy Barnes, Mark Seymour and John Butler. Whilst regularly making demos and working on other projects in the studio, it would be 2016 before the next Matt Joe Gow record, Seven Years, was released to critical acclaim. The record was self-produced by Matt and guitarist Andrew Pollock. After touring and playing numerous festivals in support of the record, and encouraged by its positive reception, Matt returned to the studio in 2018 to make the follow-up, Break, Rattle and Roll. An ambitious record with keys, horns, pedal steel and backing vocalists supplementing the core band, it was again released to wide acclaim and accolades including the Music Victoria Award for Best Country/Americana Album Of The Year. In addition to full band shows, Matt undertook a solo tour with Grant-Lee Phillips, with Phillips posting that [Break, Rattle and Roll’s] “Bridge Over Concrete is on constant rotation in my head!”. After the rewarding but demanding process of making Break, Rattle and Roll, Gow headed back into the studio in early 2020 with the guiding concept of making a stripped-back record; unvarnished by production tricks and elaborate instrumentation, which would again be self-produced. With recording complete and while preparing to mix and master the record that would become Between Tonight & Tomorrow, the world was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. With Matt overseas and the Melbourne studio under strict lockdown, the choice was made to continue work on the record remotely over the following year. The result is a unique record which, although laborious to make during a dark and difficult time, is the most pure and direct expression of Matt’s song writing and artistic vision of his career.

Barry Saunders
Private House Concert
11th December
Barry Saunders, along with some accordion, snare & piano from Al Norman, delighted us.
“With deep rural roots, and a restlessness that has taken him down every backroad, through ghost towns and past shuttered memorial halls, it is understandable that Barry Saunders has become one of New Zealand’s most recognisable voices by describing the country and its characters. The last 50 years have been a continual road trip of shared music, conversations and observations that have
all led to songs that tumble out like faded photos from a much-thumbed album. Since the mid-1980s he has fronted The Warratahs, whose songs have become part of the soundscape. Their TV advertisement for the Interislander connected them with fans just as the ferries connect New Zealand. Alongside his work with The Warratahs, several solo albums have provided Saunders with a more personal outlet for his prolific songwriting and his gritty, everyman voice.” John Pilley

Krissy Jackson
& Tony Hillyard
27th November
She’s a little bit quirky: He’s a little bit trad. This talented duo weave fiddle fireworks and lyrical guitar with silky vocals, to craft their arrangements for songs and tales that stir the blood and soothe the soul. “It’s so good to be making music for you once again. This time, in the lovely, intimate setting at Hilltop House Concerts in Kelburn, Wellington! We can’t wait. We have old songs, new songs and some downright quirky songs to sing and play for you. Songs of love, grief and glory. Songs with their own special tales to tell. Come on a journey to far-away places and far-out people! Come and find out about: revenge in the Carpathians; what are Infidel Skies; why is good tea so important; why you shouldn’t skate on rivers; and why Adam didn’t get the Apple and more, much, much more!”

For more than four decades the singer and guitarist led the iconic country-blues band The Windy City Strugglers, as well as playing with pioneering rock group Mammal in the 70s and fronting brassy funk-rockers The Pelicans in the 80s. His songs have been covered by Midge Marsden, Darren Watson, Kokomo, The Rag Poets and Marg Layton.
Bassist Steve Hemmens played with Bill in Mammal. Recently returned from many years in the UK, he adds warmth and swing to the mix.
The Bill Lake songbook is perfectly suited to an intimate setting.

Rag Poets
With opening set Bill Lake & Steve Hemmens
Sunday
14th November
4pm to 7pm
Wellington band Rag Poets featuring Carl Evensen (Fourmyula), Clinton Brown (Rocking Horse) and Phil Hope (Kal-Q-Lated Risk) along with Al Norman (The Warratahs) and Vic Singe (The Desotos). They play many of their old hits from this era (60s and 70s) plus new material they’ve written and a bunch of covers from the likes of John Prine, Boz Scaggs and Neil Young. The band thrives on big vocal harmonies as they continue to maintain the unique sound they’ve developed over the years. Their audiences love the ‘timeless’ music they play and the stories they tell.

Carol Bean Music
During Covid Level Two
Saturday
30th October
7.30 – 11pm
A fantabulous night for “Moondance”, and dance we did. An absolutely great night. With one foot in acoustic NZ folk/country music, and one foot in the blues, Carol has released three original albums. The Carol Bean Quartet performed with Costa Botes – guitars, Andreas Lepper – percussion, George Packard – bass, Alan Norman – piano, & Holly Carrington – BV’s. Musical influences include Ry Cooder, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, James McMurtry, Memphis Minnie, Elmore James, J B Lenoir, & Otis Taylor.

Janet Muggeridge & Dave Murphy
Saturday
14th August
8pm – 11pm
Dave and Janet play their own brand of Americana, blues and originals, underpinned by Murphy’s driving fingerstyle acoustic guitar, and huge earthy
vocals. Muggeridge adds to the mix shimmering harmonies and mandolin played in her own style. Together they have a formidable skill set, and present a repertoire that will have your emotions tugged in every way. They guested at the final and tenth Tui festival at New Year, and appeared at the Hamilton Folk Festival, Easter 2021. In April 2021, they presented a well received set of music on the Singer Songwriters Stage at the Newtown Festival in Wellington. Dave is considered a master of finger-style blues guitar, and a fine interpreter of the blues. Nic Bollinger considers him, ‘’an icon in the NZ music scene”. Janet is s founding member of Gumboot Tango, and often finds herself adding harmony and mandolin as a guest player.

The Downunderdogs
Saturday 31st July 2021
7pm-10pm
This three-part vocal/instrumental blend features first-class flatpicking, stellar songwriting, heavenly harmonies, yodelling, and lots of laughs. Like their music, Jack MacKenzie, Peter Dyer and Cathy Dyer are American born and bred. They enjoy discovering, digging into and arranging “Americana” country, bluegrass, old-time, and swing music. Think Hank Williams, Doc Watson, Carter Family, and originals by Jack and Peter. The Downunderdogs have been featured guests at Kiwigrass and Wellington Folk Festival.

Julie Bevan
Saturday 24th July 2021
4pm to 7pm
From Colin Morris’s review;- “Wellington born Bevan studied at The New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōkī, founded the Brazilian music group Zamba Flam, and is a founding member of Wellington’s Batucada. Wellingtonians are super proud of this group. They make you sit up, then get up and shake your booty regardless of age. Kaleidoscope (my favourite with guitar and accordion in the style of Astor Piazzolla) is an outstanding track. The album is absolutely steeped in the sounds of Brazil. The delicate Spanish guitar nylon string plucking mixed with bass, drums, trumpet, sax, and accordion all fused seamlessly together gives us a sound redolent of João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and Luiz Bonfa. But it’s more than a homage. There are some serious compositions on display here. None more so than the electrifying picking by Marcelo Nami and Bevan on Stone Eaters or the non-Brazilian track Show Us Your Bole-R-Us, which incorporates some fiery flamenco. The very next track Dervish and the muted trumpet of Altair Martins made me think of Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain. It’s a catch-me-if-you-can kind of a track between guitar and trumpet before expanding into a drum solo. Technically it’s the most satisfying on the disc. It comes as no surprise that all the music was composed and arranged by Julie Bevan. For sheer listening pleasure, Danca Dos Gnomos, a seemingly improvised jazz track, works best. This wonderful disc will knock your socks off. Oh, to see this album released in Brazil.
